Queen Elizabeth had her hands full in 2019. The royal family was shaken with numerous scandals, ranging from Prince Andrew’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein to Prince Hanbury’s affair with Prince Hanbury to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s troubled relationship with the public. Now, Harry and Meghan have announced that they will ditch their royal titles and cut ties altogether from their royal representation — and the Queen must be much relieved.
2019 gave the queen some major challenges in her old age
Queen Elizabeth turned 93 in 2019, and the year did not come without its challenges. Prince William was involved in a fraud incident with family friend Rose Hanbury. And although the rumors were never clarified — and are expected not to be exact — it still shook the family.
Prince Andrew’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein also came with considerable scrutiny. He has since been asked to step back from his royal duties in the wake of allegations of sexual harassment, which was not easy for Queen Elizabeth to deal with either.
Harry and Meghan were another problem she was constantly forced to address
Perhaps the most ongoing problem within the family was with the Queen’s grandson and granddaughter-in-law Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Harry and Meghan were consistently portrayed negatively in the media, and it was clear that handling for them was slowly becoming too much. The Queen addressed the negative press around Meghan when the two were only still dating, and it has been a tough fight ever since.
The media labeled Meghan as a social climber and suggested that she was trying to rape Harry away from her family — and the public was utterly buying into it. Meghan and Harry’s Instagram continued to be filled with negative comments until they finally exploded.
Harry and Meghan’s departure is one less thing Queen Elizabeth has to worry about
Harry and Meghan took a six-week break from royal life, where they toured Vancouver, Canada, and got a taste of what life was like without royal chaos. And upon their return to the headlines, their decision was made: they would leave the family. Although it appears to have been a shock to everyone, the Queen must indeed be relieved by her departure.
Harry and Meghan were drowning in the negative press, and it was becoming a constant problem for the Queen. The downside was causing additional rumors among family members, such as the alleged bullying of Prince William (who has been killed by the brothers) and Meghan’s alleged feud with Kate. Her departure means that Rani will no longer have to deal with many lousy presses.
It’s unclear if Harry will remain close with his family
Of course, Harry wants to be close to his family, despite the rift with William that he briefly discussed in the Sussex documentary. However, living halfway around the world means Harry won’t see his family often, and it seems almost inevitable that he won’t be close to the royalty. Time will tell how the entire exit plays out, but it looks like a significant risk for both of them to put all their eggs in a basket with each other. However, the Queen is probably sighing relief about right now.
