Prince Philip husband of Queen Elizabeth II Is Hospitalized: Prince Philip, the 98-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain, was taken to a hospital in London on Friday as a precautionary measure to treat a pre-existing condition, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
“The Duke of Edinburgh traveled from Norfolk this morning to King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment,” said the palace, using the official royal title for Prince Philip. “Entry is a precautionary measure, on the advice of her Royal Highness’s doctor.”
London’s secretive, private King Edward VII Hospital has treated members of the monarchy for decades. The BBC reported, Prince Philip went to the hospital.
Phillip, who is dealing with a range of health issues and underwent hip surgery at the hospital last year, announced in May 2014 that he would retire from public life. No reason was given in time for his decision.
He was living at the Royal Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, 100 miles north of London, when he was taken to the hospital on Friday morning. The British news media had reported that Rajkumar was expected to remain in the hospital for a few days but was not taken from an ambulance, and his admission was planned.
The queen arrived at the property on Friday morning, where members of the royal family gather for the Christmas festivities, and it was unclear whether Philip would be discharged in time to attend them. He missed the celebration for the first time in 2011 when he was hospitalized due to chest pain.
A native of Greece, Philip married the future queen in 1949 and was seen in the public eye in Britain as a symbol of the stability of the monarchy during its 65 years. A nephew of war leader Lord Mountbatten, he served as an aide-de-camp for him during World War II and was later appointed to the highest ranks in the British Army, including Marshal of the Royal Airforce.
He made his last solo appearance in public in August 2014, when he paid tribute to a group of Royal Marines. He resurfaced in 2014 at the wedding of his grandson Prince Harry and with Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex.
In January, Philip was involved in a car accident in Norfolk. He was injured even though his Land Rover sport-utility vehicle overturned. Two days later, police warned him after he was photographed driving without a seatbelt. Rajkumar gave up his driver’s license in February and was not charged in connection with the accident.
