“I think my mother’s quote was, ‘Be a lawyer, be a doctor, be a leper missionary, but not be an actress!'” Dern told me that time on Sunday. But Dern still had her way and started talking to her well-connected friends sneaking around her mother’s back.
“I became quite smart and somewhat tactical — even sneaky — into a corner with an agent going to my mother’s birthday party and saying: ‘Do you let me come and read a monologue to you and tell me if you think I am a genius? And if I do that, will you send me out on auditions?” Dern remembered.
The actress said she was only 11 at the time, “so clearly I was crazy and inspired to do it.”
Since then, the mother-daughter duo has gone on to star together in several projects, including 1990’s Wild at Heart, 1991’s Tourism Rose, 2006’s Inland State, and the HBO series Enlightened. In 2010, the Hollywood Walk of Fame also honored a family of actors with three stars around.
The 77th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony aired live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 5.
