Congress should now adopt the agenda of a movement: Sonia Gandhi at party meeting

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday accused the BJP government at the Center of misusing the mandate in the “most dangerous” manner.

In a meeting with senior Congress leaders in New Delhi, Gandhi expressed concern over the country’s economic situation and said that the BJP government was testing the resolve and flexibility of the Congress. News agency PTI quoted sources as saying that the Modi-led NDA government has to reach out to the public to uncover it.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, All India Congress Committee General Secretary and in-charge of various states, heads of state government and CLP leaders were also present at the meeting. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was not present at the meeting.

Sonia Gandhi called her first meeting after taking over from her son Rahul as Congress President. During the meeting, party leaders also discussed plans for 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi.

Sources said that Sonia Gandhi said that democracy under the Modi government is in crisis and alleged that she was misusing and abusing her mandate in the “most dangerous” way. Sources said that the Congress President accused the government of appreciating the legacy of freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and BR Ambedkar. He said that the BJP is misrepresenting his real messages to further his “dangerous agenda”.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy were present in the meeting, while Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel were present.

Other leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel, AK Antony, KC Venugopal, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were present.
