The nominees for the 20th annual Game Developers Choice Awards at GDC have been unveiled, and Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding is leading them. The organizers of the 2020 Game Developers Conference have announced the nominees for the 20th annual Game Developers Choice Awards, and Death Stranding is leading the pack. The event is already scheduled to take place between March 16 and 20 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.
The Game Developers’ Choice Awards have been held as an integral part of the GDC for the last 20 years in a row. GDC differs from most other industry events in the sense that it is not a trade show or fan convention – it is a peer-based summit where developers gather to discuss and celebrate each other’s work. According to the event’s website, any video game that was released and made publicly available during the 2019 calendar year is eligible for free nomination at the 2020 Game Developers Choice Awards, regardless of platform or distribution medium. The nominees and winners are chosen from all parts of the industry by an “invitation-only organization of leading sports creators.” The Game of the Year category includes previous winners’ 2018 rediscovery of God of War, as well as a modern masterpiece: The Legend of Zelda: 2017 Breath of the wild.
In a recent post on the official website, GDC organizers have revealed this year’s sports crop that has been nominated for its various awards. Death Stranding scored the most nominations in multiple categories. It will be considered for Best Audio, Best Design, Innovation Award, Best Narrative Game, Best Technology, Best Visual Arts, and Game of the Year. Other major contenders include Control and Outside Wilds, who both received five nominations. Control is for Best Audio, Best Narrative, Best Technology, Best Visual Arts, and Game of the Year. Outer Wilds is running for Best Debut, Best Design, Innovation Award, Best Narrative, and Game of the Year.
Several other games are also finalists in several categories, such as Disco Allianzium and Untitled Swan Game, which has four nominations. Sayonara Wild Heart and Sekiro: Shadow Twice Die were both nominated for three awards. The award show will be hosted by the portal’s Kim Swift and the Left 4 Dead Fame, who is now the director of game design at Stadium 2P Games. The event will take place on 18 March and will be live-streamed on GDC’s Twitch Channel.
The 2019 high-quality video game release was nothing to poke fun at, and the GDCA nominations reflect this. While we don’t know the identity of those, who want to recognize these games, an award show hosted by developers is generally more interesting than something like the ad-hued game awards, for example. Devs may appreciate games like Death Stranding for different reasons than players and critics, but ultimately, they are still part of those two groups as well.
