Netflix released the first season of its fantasy adventure series The Witcher Today, which is based on a popular series of books by Andrzej Sakowski. Henry Cavill stars in Rivia’s nominal Witcher Geralt, wandering the continent’s land in search of monster-hunter beings to oblivion for some sweet, sweet coin. If you have already started watching the show, you might be wondering what Bilbo is doing with his voice in the name of Baggins Cavill. Despite the continent being an apparent correspondence to Europe, and every other character in the series speaking with a definite British accent, Geralt feels like a private detective who just got back from a semester abroad.
Now right in front, it needs to be said that Cavill is a huge fan of the Witcher, both subtitles and CDs based on the video game series novels by Projekt Lal. According to an interview he gave with IGN last year, he actually played through Witcher 3: Wild Hunt more than once, and the book series called “Amazing .. really really good … They are well worth a read. So the man has done his research and thought a lot about how Great should speak.
In an interview with Wrap Up, Cavill explained how he approached the subject of Geralt’s strange accent (which is the one thing that the characters in the commentary on the book series), and how he ultimately decided how it should sound.
Cavill said, ‘There are a lot of changes from books in terms of mythology. “And there’s only so much that can be done. And for me, as an artist on the show, it was my job to bring my performances, and everybody else was allowed to bring their performances separately. Yes, there is in the books, of course, a reverie accent.
He explains, “If you look at England, for example, there is a huge variety of regional accents across a very, very small space.” “And indeed the continent would be a lot like that. So for me, it wasn’t necessary to give Geralt a specific accent which was different from everyone else, because it would be impossible because there are a lot of English accents. Eventually, You are going to run into someone who has a similar accent because they are trying to do something different, as Cavill continues. So for me, it was about bringing a voice to Geralt, which he book A. Who and space was able to express the essence of bringing that format that went permitted within the show.
It is worth seeing how the voice Cavill chose is very close to how Geralt sounds in the video game series, of which the actor is a recruiting fan. There are other subtle nods to the game throughout the show, such as the way Geralt moves and his judicious use of the phrase “hum.” Technically the show is based on the novel series and not the game, which has a separate license, so it is entirely possible that Cavill is not allowed to mention the game when talking about the show. But whatever the case, Geralt is spot on his performance.
