Aquaman was a masterstroke for DC as it was a smash hit at the box office. Missing mark Aquaman with a lot of DC movies was a perfect film for him. Not only was the film a commercial hit, but also garnering a lot of positive critical acclaim. Considering all these factors, it is no surprise that Warner Bros. President Toby Emmerich has announced a sequel.
Jason Momoa’s excellent portrayal of the half-human and half-Atlantic character seemed to be a big part of the success, and so he has already been cast in the sequel to play Aquaman.
In the movie, we saw Arthur finally taking up the possession of the king and get to meet his mother after a long while. Black Manta seemed to be dead, but due to the mid-credits, we see him alive. This further indicates that he will be back to get revenge even stronger than before, and this most probably will form the base for the plot of the sequel.
The other cast member who will reprise his role is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, as Black Manta. Amber Heard played Mera, a very prominent character in the movie, but there might be some complications in her returning due to assault accusations surrounding her former husband, Johnny Depp.
Apart from this, essential details about cast and plot have not been given yet. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick wrote the screenplay for the first film and has also been roped in to write the sequel. In regards to Jens Van returning as director, nothing has been confirmed, and he has said that his collaboration with the project will depend on the script. Aquaman is currently scheduled for release on 16 December 2022, which is far in the future, and so we’ll have to wait for other details of the film to be out.
