Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman signs a big deal with Netflix. Based on the Dark Horse comic book series of the same name, Umbrella Academy was created by Blackman for Netflix and developed by Jeremy Staller. The show centers around a dysfunctional family consisting of reunited brothers to solve the mystery of their father’s death and the threat of an impending apocalypse. Premiere in February 2019, the cast of Umbrella Academy includes Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan, and Mary J. Blige.
Umbrella Academy has proved to be a hit, both critically and in terms of audience. The science-fiction drama has been praised for its visuals, receiving a Primetime Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Special Visual Effects category. Back in April last year, Netflix announced that the series was streamed by more than 75,000,000 subscribers within the first month of its release. Umbrella Academy also ranked as the third most popular television title on Netflix in 2019, according to its estimates of service, losing only Stranger Things and The Witcher. Blackman has been one of those components of success so far, working on the teleplay of essential episodes, including the season 1 finale.
This successful partnership will continue and expand further, as Deadline reports that Blackman has signed a four-year deal with Netflix. As part of the agreement, which is said to be in the mid-eight figure range, Blackman will continue to be the executive producer of Showrunner and Umbrella Academy, while also writing and producing other projects for the new show and streaming service through its borderline entertainment banner.
Umbrella Academy, which has been renewed for a second season, is Blackman’s most recent high-profile gig. But he has been a part of other acclaimed shows. Some of his other credits include writing and executive producing carbon, military, Fargo, and individual practice episodes.
Blackman is the latest addition to Netflix’s impressive roster of content creators. She joins the likes of Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, and David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. These acquisitions have paid off, with Murphy working on several projects for Streamer. Benioff and Weiss, known for Game of Thrones, lined up their first thoughts. Rhimes as well developed a society adaptation based on the true story of Betrayed Anna Delvey. Blackman would join some illustrious company, and deal with the New World to free his new deal while remaining as the head of Umbrella Academy.
