Are Marvel Movies Really “Movies”? It became a mass question in 2019 when a scintillating director, theme park ride by Martin Scorsese, a Hollywood icon and metric known to every man, harvests MCU films as nothing more than chewing up valuable space in multiplexes. Rejected. Mr. Scorsese, of course, deserves his opinion, but it caused a hell of a stir (because in 2019, we also need a lot of things to complain about online, naturally).
I am trying to explain this smart move by Scorsese’s daughter, Francesca. On her Instagram story (captured by Deadline), Meera Mascara revealed that she wrapped her father’s Christmas present in a Marvel-themed paper.
Hilarious. I love everything about it … As long as she is saying that these films are less than film. That they are equal to the holiday wrapping paper, this would be a barbaric indictment of the status of superhero filmmaking, delivered by the daughter of one of the greatest storytellers of our generation. It’s also very possible that I’m reading too much into this, and that Scorsese just has a terrible sense of humor, and Francesca Scorsese knows precisely how to break her father’s balls. To quote Pesci in the dictatorial Irishman, “This is what it is.”
No matter which side of this debate falls on you, both Miracle and Marty’s terrible year was this year. Marvel Studios dominated the box office frame (and almost universally received critical acclaim) with its output of Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man’s Sony collaboration: Away From Home. The trio rose past the $ 100,000,000 mark at the international box office, and Endgame is now the highest-grossing film of all time.
Martin Scorsese, meanwhile, made a winning picture in The Irishman, with some of his most powerful allies to give a gut to reteaming (which Pesci, Harvey Keitel, and Robert De Niro, to name a few) mafia types Punching coda-gangster photo Scorsese proven in all but Goodfellas and casinos. Although released by Netflix, the film enjoyed a limited theatrical run, maintained its 3 + hour run time, and is expected to compete for several Oscars when the Academy announced its nominees in January.
So can this blood feud end? I’m just kidding. This is the most harmless debate in all of cinema. Scorsese makes some excellent points about studios and distributors being thankful for the tentpole that Sahara annual releases schedule. And he laments the fact that in 2019, he could not find a film as the Irishman made in the traditional studio system.
But viewers are getting their movies — and movies like Roma or 6 Underground — on streaming platforms. We have evolved. There is room in many tables for all types of stories. And the joke was attended by Francesca Scorsese. We hope Marty got a good laugh from it.
