HBO Max’s upcoming Green Lantern TV series has a lot of ride expectations on it, and here’s how they can avoid making the same mistakes as the 2011 film. The superhero blockbuster led by Ryan Reynolds was a critical and commercial disaster, grossing only $ 219,000,000 on a budget of $ 200,000,000. There were dozens of factors contributing to the film’s poor reception, including poorly used CGI, uneven screenplay, and half-baked characters. Despite being a point of praise in the movie, Ryan Reynolds himself has openly voiced his displeasure with it in recent years, culminating in a Deadpool 2 post-credits scene where Merc with Mouth kicks back and time travel and kills the actor. The first is that he can accept the role.
Warner Bros. has been trying to figure out how to make Green Lantern work in live-action ever since the much-maligned flop, including reports of a film reboot as far back as 2014. While it can be praised how quickly the script writers wanted to deal with the big bad onscreen, having Parallax be one of the worst mistakes villain HAL Jordan faced before could make the creative team behind the film. The Green Lantern villain was condensed by Space Fright-based parasite he is known as in the comics, a primary and poorly designed CGI villain that Jordan all too easily defeats in the film’s third act. The decision was a significant point of controversy for comic book fans. It attracted a lot of unfavourable comparisons to Fox’s portrayal of Galactus in the final act of Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer.
The history of Parallax within comics is much more vibrant and layered than in the film. In the source material, he is the embodiment of fear on the emotional spectrum, spending aeons travelling from planet to planet and forcing them to destroy themselves out of paranoia. Finally captured and trapped in a central power battery by the protector of the universe, Parallax used his abilities to manipulate HAL Jordan for years, preying on his fear and self-doubt. The final straw came in the emerald twilight story, which was seen by Jordan’s house in the coastal city, destroyed by Cyborg Superman. With HAL teasing and weak, Parallax was able to take control of Jordan’s body and turn him into one of the most dangerous villains the DC universe ever faced.
HAL Jordan eventually died and returned, in control of his body, but the events remained one of the most significant and shocking character changes in all of comic book history. An original story villain robs HAL Jordan’s character of one of the most powerful villains in de-comics, subduing Parallax, and even so much story-telling ability. There are dozens of small-scale Green Lantern villains that the television series could start with, including Manhunters, that would make for a more satisfying experience, while also saving Parallax for an epic debut.
Green lantern action must be imaginative
One of the biggest draws of many different Green Lantern characters is the look of their power. Because the iconic power ring draws its energy from the will of its user, the Green Lantern core is limited only to the extent of their imagination. This makes him one of the most unique and inventive superheroes in all of the comics, something that has been used to significant effect in DC source material.
However, the Green Lantern film grope the ball on this in a big way. HAL uses its power ring in any dynamic way, mostly never resorting to cliche constructions such as fighters and slingshot. This demonstrates a lack of imagination on the part of the creative team and, ironically, the biggest weakness of a lantern. The production budget is similar to that based on the Warner Bros. Green Lantern TV show Grant, the fight scenes should be audacious and dynamic, with a wide range of construction and inventive use of lantern power rings.
Green Lantern Show Should Stay Away From Earth
Something that DCEU failed to do in content is showing a wide variety of exciting locations in the DC Universe. Most of the action has taken place on Earth, and while we wonder whether there are some variations with the likes of Women and Shazam, for the most part, it has all taken place in major cities like Gotham and Metropolis. It gets stale after a while, and it’s hard to deny that a big reason for Miracle’s success with the MCU is that they are not afraid to show separate locations such as Knowhere and Asgard Have been.
Earth’s green lanterns, such as HAL Jordan and John Stewart, are clearly from Earth, but they are tasked with protecting an entire region of the galaxy. This means that they often find themselves in strange places and planets with never before seen, unique alien lifeforms. This is a market that DC needs to explore, and the Green Lantern television series may be an opportunity to show it right. DC fills to the brim with bizarre and surrealist planets and alien creatures, most of which have never even been heard by the general audience. While Marvel mostly uses the Guardians of the Galaxy movies to explore Space, DC can beat them in their own game by using Green Lanterns to show off some genuinely inventive corners of their universe.
Green Lantern Corps Show Off
HAL Jordan Meets Despite a montage sequence on Oa featuring several fan-favourite lanterns, the 2011 film never really captured the space police aspect of lore, instead of focusing primarily on HAL Jordan as a superhero. While the TV show seems to be trying to reconcile this by following many different lanterns from Earth, they have to go more significant than this. One of the best aspects of the Green Lantern Corps as a concept is the fact that they were initially a large-scale law enforcement agency, but for the entire galaxy. There are many different members of the organization from across the remnants of Space.
This is something that the show lean into. Aside from using just Earth-based lanterns on one side, the TV series needs to show the smaller characters within the departed core. Lights such as Kilowog and Tomar-re-flourish in a sorted setting where they can get real characterization, while fans can make appearances across favourites such as Bzzd and Mogo Living Planet. The beauty of the Green Lantern Corps is the fact that it is a large-scale family, a significant theme of comics, and one of the many aspects that the show should take advantage of if it wants to succeed.
